Tuscaloosa Academy is committed to providing a high quality college-preparatory
education. Through the curriculum and highly qualified faculty, the school focuses on the
traditional body of knowledge and skills which equip students for college and successful
careers. A strong and diverse extracurricular program provides students with
opportunities to develop their bodies, minds, leadership skills, and ability to work with
fellow students and adults.

1-4), Middle
School (grades 5-8), and Upper School (grades 9-12).

Enrollment:
Capacity enrollment for Tuscaloosa Academy is 500 students. Our Pre-School
program offers both Montessori and traditional classroom settings. There are
typically two (2) sections of each grade one through twelve.
A Diverse Student Body:
Tuscaloosa Academy serves average and above-average students. Expectations of
students are high as students are encouraged to give their best efforts in all that they
do.
The Academy actively seeks qualified students from different racial, ethnic and
socio-economic backgrounds. The school has a strong international presence within
its student and parent bodies.
Technology:
Tuscaloosa Academy is committed to using technology to enhance teaching and
learning. In addition to computers in classrooms, the school has two
fully equipped computer labs: a lab with Macintosh computers for use by
the students in Pre-School through Seventh Grade and a Windows lab (IBM
compatible computers) for students in Eighth through Twelfth Grades.
Could we change that to say that, "the school has three fully dqupped
computer labs: One lab with Imac computers for use by the students in Pre-school
through grade four, and two Windows labs for students in the Middle and Upper
school. The Upper School Lab includes 24 pentium IV workstations for
students.
Graduation Requirements:
Tuscaloosa Academy graduates have successfully completed twenty-four (24) Carnegie
units of a classical liberal arts curriculum which is enhanced through a variety of
electives.
Extra-Curricular Activities:
Beginning in the Lower School, students are given opportunities to be involved in
organized club or school-supported programs (ex: Student Council Association, Fire
Captains, etc,) which provide them with knowledge of the benefits of being involved in
school sponsored activities. As students progress into the middle and Upper Schools,
there are more academic and service clubs available for memberships, as well as
opportunities for academic competition.
Girls and boys have many opportunities to participate in competitive athletics
beginning in the sixth grade. Contact sports begins in seventh grade. T.A.
currently fields teams in volleyball, football, basketball, tennis, track, golf, softball,
baseball, and club soccer.
A Qualified, Experienced Faculty:
The faculty of Tuscaloosa Academy is experienced and dedicated to the mission and
philosophy of the school. All teachers in their field of study. Over 60% of
the faculty have earned graduate or more advanced degrees.
Tuscaloosa Academy faculty members work diligently to provide students with a complete
learning experience in and out of the classroom. In their classrooms, teachers
incorporate traditional lecture, hands-on activities, guest speakers, field trips, and
resource materials in their class daily. The faculty encourages students to
participate in many extracurricular activities. Involvement in these activities
provides students with the opportunities to develop their interests and talents, to work
together with other students to achieve common goals, and to develop leadership skills.
Leadership - Board and Admissions:
Tuscaloosa Academy is governed by a Board of Trustees which includes parents, alumni,
and local business leaders. The leadership of Tuscaloosa Academy is directed by the
Headmaster who holds a doctoral degree and has over twenty (20) years experience in
independent school and college administration. Each school division is directed by a
Division Director who has earned a postgraduate degree or degrees.
Accreditation:
Tuscaloosa Academy is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools
and holds memberships in the National, Southern, and Alabama Associations of Independent
Schools as well as other significant professional organizations which act as resources for
continual professional development of the faculty and staff.
Tuition:
The tuition range is $4,890 to $6,160 (2000-2001) depending on the student's program.
Options for payment include monthly, semi-annual, and annual plans.
Need-based financial assistance is available. Priority is given to Middle and
Upper School families. Limited Merit Scholarships for new students with evidence of
exceptional talents and/or skills are also available. Applications are available on
request.
Applying for Admission:
Tuscaloosa Academy accepts applicants for enrollment on a continual basis.
Invitations to new students for Fall admission are extended beginning in March.
