Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 4

The Tuscaloosa Academy Lower School, Preschool Division, offers a progressive, child-centered, individualized program for Pre-kindergarten (ages 3 - 4) and Kindergarten (ages 5 - 6) children. The Preschool curriculum embraces the developmental approach in both Montessori and traditional classroom settings. Additionally, several of the classes are multi-age to further provide for individual developmental needs. Also, a summer enrichment program is offered for this age group.

A highly qualified lead teacher, with the support of an experienced child-care assistant, manages each of the Preschool classrooms. In addition to the basic subjects of language arts and mathematics, all students receive instruction in music, computer, library skills, and Spanish. Kindergarten includes daily P.E. classes.

The curriculum in grades one through four emphasizes reading, writing, math, social studies, and science. In addition to the basic core courses, students receive instruction in computer science, library skills, art, music, physical education, science laboratory, and Spanish. Additionally, a guidance counselor is available to conduct sessions on matters such as conflict resolution, good communication skils, cooperation, and personal development. Higher order thinking skills are incorporated across the curriculum and at all age levels. The faculty for grades one through four consists of certified, qualified educators.
