Welcome to all things college admissions, deadlines and decisions!
I am Gabby Palmore, Tuscaloosa Academy's new college counselor. I am originally from Birmingham, Alabama, but now consider Tuscaloosa my home. I received my Bachelors degree from the University of Alabama in 2018. Immediately after graduating, I became a school teacher in Birmingham City Schools where I taught high school English for two years. I developed an affinity for proofreading my students admissions essays and even helped them pick majors and different degree programs. After realizing how much I loved helping students apply to college, I decided to earn my master's degree in School Counseling. I am receiving my Masters of Arts in School Counseling from the University of Alabama this fall. I am so excited to work with all of the students and families at Tuscaloosa Academy and look forward to meeting all of you!
With our advice but through the merit of the individual student, it is not uncommon to find Tuscaloosa Academy graduates in the classrooms of some of the nation’s premier universities and colleges. Over the last five years, 75% of our seniors have been awarded over $25 million in merit-based scholarships.
Because the college process is an educational journey that culminates with a student’s years at Tuscaloosa Academy, we believe that it is a journey for the student to undertake and lead. The college advising office is an ally and advocate to offer the appropriate help in getting our students into the schools of their choice. We promote the idea that students get themselves into college, allowing us to work with them to find the right fit, not just the fastest find.
At Tuscaloosa Academy, we believe that with the plethora of colleges and universities from which to choose, students begin with a national search that narrows as they engage in college visits, conduct a self-exploration, and meet with representatives from colleges both on and off our own campus.
Knowing that the decision about where to go to college emerges as the most important and exciting aspect for any high school student, the college advising office serves as both a resource and a service to help families find “the one.”
Warmly,
Gabby Palmore
