Tuscaloosa Academy Lower School is a wonderful place for students to grow and learn using the 21st Century skills of communication, creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration.
Our Lower School consists of the preschool through the 4th grade. The students in grades 1-4 not only have a challenging curriculum but also enjoy enrichments such as music, art, library, computer, STEM, foreign language, and PE, each week. Classroom teachers and enrichment teachers develop cross-curriculum material and activities throughout the year. We enjoy small class sizes with a homeroom teacher, but also have a certified teaching assistant who can pull out and help create even smaller groups for more individualized learning.
The library, which has been completely renovated, is a space in which all of the lower school children love to visit. Each grade goes to the library weekly for story time and checking out books. Accelerated Reader and Star Reading tests are given to enhance their reading skills.
The computer lab is furnished with multimedia computers for each child. Keyboarding, computer skills, coding, and robotics are taught in the computer lab as part of their computer and STEM lessons. The students in grades 1-4 have one-to-one iPads in the classrooms where they do collaborative and creative projects.
Music classes involve children in singing, playing instruments and practicing for performances. These performances help build confidence and self-esteem in the students. Grade level performances are created to enhance their classroom curriculum.
Spanish and French classes are held in the classrooms on each grade level. These teachers offers the children a wide variety of seasonal activities and cultural experiences.
Children in kindergarten through grade four have physical education each day. Our large outside playground and the gym provide areas for students to be taught a variety of games that build skills and team sports at their ability level.
The art room is a place for creativity. Our art teacher teaches the properties of fine art then allows them to create using a variety of art media. The students are proud to display their work in the hallways for everyone to see.
After school activities include: Musical Beginnings (piano lessons), gymnastics, arts and crafts, and Karate. Homework Club and Extended Day are also available.
Tuscaloosa Academy provides families with a safe, family oriented, and challenging environment for their young children.
